A reflection...
This semester I had the opportunity to student teach for about nine
weeks in a grade school and twelve weeks in a high school. Before this
semester, I observed teachers and planned short lessons that tied into
their current topics. This semester I had much more responsibility with
classroom management and with lesson planning. Being this active in a
classroom helped me gain knowledge, confidence and reflection/
assessment skills. Throughout this semester, I have reflected on what
was effective and what wasn't. I had to adjust my lessons
and remove
activities that weren't successful. It was a valuable
trial and error
learning experience. This semester demonstrated the importance of
flexible lesson plans. I had to mold my lessons around my students and
remember that not every student has the same needs. I also had to adapt
my lessons around my students' interests and lifestyles.
I noticed
that once they got personal with their artwork and a personal meaning
evolved, the students put more value in their work which resulted in
harder work. These trials and tribulations have helped me assess my
experience based on the Wisconsin standards for beginning teachers.
